Juicing on a budget

by Jennifer on February 2, 2011

After I saw Gina’s post about how to use a juicer and why, I was super disappointed. How could I possibly afford a good juicer that would make such delicious and healthy beverages on my part time budget? If you missed it, check out the video below:

Coincidentally, that same morning that she published the video we got hit with (surprise, surprise) a terrible snow storm. After officially declaring myself stir-crazy, I decided to brave the storm and head out to Target just to wander around.

Low and behold I noticed a sale sign in the appliance aisle. Sure enough there was a Hamilton Beach Juicer for only $29.95 (originally $35). I immediately grabbed my phone and called the bf who patiently listened to me fight with myself. Did I need a juicer? Would I use a juicer? Where would I put a juicer? And how good could a $35 juicer really be? The bf told me to just get it and rest my little worrying mind.

Holy. Yum. This lovely mix is strawberries and carrots, all ready to grab on the go, because lets face it, I am way too busy saving money to be juicing before I leave in the morning! ;)

Do you have a juicer? What are your favorite combos? What was your best purchase lately?

(Oh, and btw FTC – I bought this with my own money and blah blah blah blah blah.)

LOVE my juicer. Fav combo lately is beets, carrots, celery, parsley, apple. Juicing carrots with anything makes it yummy. I have been juicing for like 10 years…carrots are almost always in any combo I make :-)

Welcome to the world of juicing, lovely! Enjoy!

I’m still intimidated by juicing–and don’t love green juice, much to my chagrin. Great post!

I own a juicer that I got as a gift. It’s the Warning Professional one on amazon and it was only $50. I think carrots are the secret to juicing on a budget because they are so cheap and you can get a lot of juice out of them! I like carrot, apple, and ginger the best but I haven’t experimented nearly enough.

mmm I love juicing! I was lucky enough to be given 2 hand me down juicers, but unfortunately they are very old. I don’t mind at all because one of them still works really well but I am worried that it is not going to last much longer…I use it a lot! Good to know that there are inexpensive juicer options out there!

I don’t have a juicer. Sometimes I think I want one. But I just remember the one my step-dad bought when I was a kid. It was used a couple of times (horrible tasting drinks) and that was that.

I have a Breckenville…pain to clean, but def worth the investment. We don’t have juicing places like they do in NYC….plus even if we did, the price would probably be soo much higher than it needs to be. If you got one for $35, I’d say you hit the jackpot!

I do the green lemonade recipe (found http://evolvingwell.com/wordpress/2010/09/21/nyc-september-adventures/) on my blog, but use romaine instead of kale. Great way to start the AM, but won’t get back to juicing until the spring. It just simply makes me much too cold!

After reading so any blogs lately raving about juicers, I really want one! The bright colors seem so cheerful for this grey season.

I discovered I had a juicer in my garage over the weekend (was my sisters & she left if with me when she moved out). I used it for the first time last night. The juice was DELICIOUS – but it was a total pain in the ass! I used one of Kristina (SpaBettie)’s recipies – grapefruit, lemon & spinach – SO refreshing after a hard run. But it took forever to clean up – I don’t think the juicer I have was designed very well… I’m going to stick it out & try lots of mixtures before I decide whether to upgrade to a better design that is easier to clean! Your carrot/strawberry combo sounds great – on my list of must-trys!

I have a juicer that I almost never use, despite how tasty the juice is. I’ll have to pull it out again! I always feel like juicing ends up being more expensive than smoothie-ing because so much produce is used to make a glass. Still, it’s so delicious.

That’s such a bargain for a juicer! I’ve always wanted to make homemade juice. I see it all over Blog World too! :-)

I have been on the fence too about purchasing a juicer. Asking myself if its worth spending tons of money on one and the produce and would I actually use it (take the time to make it and then clean?) Totally worth $25-$35 though if you recommend???

I don’t have a juicer but I have a Magic Bullet which I use to make my shakes. I’ve wondered whether it was worth getting a juicer too. I no longer drink juice (if I’m going to drink my calories it better be wine :D ) but I like the idea of detoxing juices once in awhile!

I have a juicer and I love it!!!! The juice tastes so fresh and amazing and this is all coming from someone that was NOT a juice drinker. At all. My favorite combos are apples and oranges or apple, carrot, beet, ginger. Yum. :)

Hooray, you got a juicer! That is so awesome. I have a Vitamix, so I just make smoothies! I guess I just don’t really see the difference! I guess the only difference is smoothies are thicker and you can’t just throw a grapefruit into the Vitamix, it wouldn’t taste too good!

actually, gina’s post also encouraged me to drag out my neglected juicer! i tried a combo of one large apple, two medium carrots, and a small (one-inch or so) knob of ginger. it was SO good. i recommend!

I never considered juicing until I became well acquainted with Doug Kaufmann’s work in regards to “The Fungus Link.” I typically use a few carrots, green apple, and a half a cucumber, then sweeten with stevia. It actually keeps me full too. I found it very beneficial to drink when my 24 hr fast is over. It’s a good way to satisfy my hunger while keeping the calories low.

I am super interested in how it keeps you full! juice contains no fiber which means it is DIRECTLY transported in the blood stream… no stomach filling or anything :)

i JUST got a juicer this weekend for my birthday (I requested it) and love it so far! the cleaning up is not that bad either. this morning I made: 3 clementines, bunch of baby carrots, half a head of romaine and 2 celery ribs. I then added half a lemon and a few stevia drops because the celery was quite powerful haha. I plan on doing a big post tomorrow and the differences between juicing and blending because there are A LOT, also health wise.
