Superfood Special: Goji berries

by Jennifer on February 10, 2011

Goji berries are grown in East Asia, Tibet, and parts of California. They are extremely high in antioxidants and in protein, contain 18 amino acids including all 8 essential ones, they provide more than 20 trace minerals, all while being low in sugar!

They are great to use in place of raisins (think granola bars, trail mix, oatmeal, muffins, scones, energy bars, etc) but since I love raisins, I would use these babies to compliment them, since they have a very cranberry-like taste. I think I will also be giving these babies a try: Goji Chocolate Chip Brownie. Umm, where have you been all my life?

Another awesome way to get the yum-factor and  benefits of Gogi berries is by adding a handful to hot water and let sit and hydrate for 5 to 10 minutes creating a delicious tea! Best part? Studies have shown that these help decrease the signs of aging? Hey there, wrinkle free face! ;)

Sunfood sells these for $14.95 for an 8 ounce bag (raw, sun-dried, organic). At first I first thought this was a lot of money, but then I realized my sample size (which I thought was huge) was 2 ounces, so getting 8 ounces is really getting a lot of bang for your buck! Plus, I don’t know about you, but I spend more than $15 on wrinkle cream. Just sayin’.

[FTC Disclosure: Sunfood did send me a sample of the Goji berries for my SuperFood Special Column, however, I was not compensated for this post and all thoughts and opinions expressed here are my own.]

Have you ever had Goji berries? What is the best new superfood or healthy treat you’ve tried lately?

I’ve never tried them but I’ve seen them at Whole Foods a few times. I don’t love dried fruit but I’m intrigued by the idea of using them in tea.

I’ve never tried goji berries – but they look yummy! (come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve ever even seen them in the store I shop at!)

Does greek yogurt count as “super food”? That’s about as close as I’ve gotten to trying anything super & now I’m seriously addicted. I have it every morning for breakfast & even got my husband hooked!

I like goji berries! I usually hydrate them in water and then mix them with yogurt or oatmeal for breakfast, though I don’t use them that often.

If there are any Asian markets around where you live, you can get them for SUPER cheap there. I got a huge bag for $3!!

I just started seeing goji berries but did not try them until last week when I purchased Goji Berry Flake & Cluster cereal by Yogi. It really is amazing but I think I might have to try that brownie too especially after reading about the wonderful nutritional properties these little guys have. A real super food!

Goji berries were used a lot in the soups I drank as a kid. Guess the parents/grandparents already knew how good they are for you. Haven’t had some recently though. :)
