Back on the Fitness Track

Okay, so I need to admit that the last few weeks in my life have been a bit of a roller coaster ride taking me out of state and even across the country. Some of these trips were expected and planned and some not so expected; but whichever the case, we have all been there at one time or another and know that these “times” can ruin even our best laid plans to be healthy and fit. And well, this is exactly what I am facing at this point in time. Now that I am back home, the challenge of getting myself back on the fitness track lurks in front of my like some scary fire-breathing dragon.

But like any fitness warrior, I am ready for the battle. Whenever I find myself in this spot I whip out my 6 tried and true tips for getting back on the fitness track. These are what have worked for me in the past and get me right back into the fitness game. So if you are faced with your own scary fitness dragon at this point in time, don’t fear…try these tips and get back on your fitness track.

1. Start your day motivated.

My motivation is music; so as soon as I wake up I put on my favorite songs. In fact I like to use the same songs from my workout playlist. Not only does the music put me in a good mood, but it also mentally prepares for my upcoming workout.

2. Workout in the AM!

There is no way around this one for me. I know some of you like the afternoons or evenings, but for me, it has to be the morning. Just gets my day off right and puts my mind in a healthy mode of thinking.

3. Track your workouts and keep yourself accountable.

Yes, this may sound a bit tedious but keeping a fitness journal/calendar/tracking sheet (whatever you like) gives you a sense of accomplishment each day. I even go as far as giving myself a gold star or a happy face for each completed workout.

4. Take a cardio break.

Now do not get too excited here.  What I really mean is to break your cardio into shorter intervals. For example, if you intend to do a 30 minute cardio session, break it into 5 six minute intervals and intersperse them throughout. For me it makes my cardio fly by!

5. Subscribe to different fitness sites or blogs.

If you go this route, you will wake up to fitness information and routines in your Inbox first thing in the morning. Just like planting seeds in a garden!

6. Create a “Fitness Mantra”.

Just one little phrase that you can repeat to yourself as you workout. Totally motivating and keeps your fitness mind engaged.

I start my day now with a fruit/veggie smoothie to ensure I make at least one healthy habit in the new year. It gives me energy and puts me in the right mindset to make mindful choices throughout the day. Love it!

Thanks Shannyn! Love your idea of starting the day with healthy fare. I plan on adding that to my list too.
