Create a Healthy Lifestyle

by Jenn FitzPatrick on May 7, 2012

We all know that to be physically healthy we must include the basics: healthy eating and exercise. But a huge part of being healthy is to live a healthy and happy lifestyle too. Easy enough, some of you may be saying. But for those of you who struggle with this concept here are some easy and practical ways to create a healthy lifestyle.

* Practice an Attitude of Gratitude

I am sure many of you have heard this before, but I really wonder if you have tried it in your own life on a daily basis. I did a few years ago with two other girlfriends and it was incredible. Each day we would email each other five things we were grateful for and share our thoughts. I found that I began to anticipate the emails and the content of their lists. Turned out to be one of the most powerful exercises I have done to date and I encourage everyone to try it as well.

*Live Each Day Happily Without Focusing on Your Problems

By nature, we humans are egocentric creatures and focusing on ourselves and our problems has become one of the biggest “diseases” in our culture. Let’s face it, it easier to deal with the problem than try to move toward a solution. But that is exactly what needs to be done.

*Have a Sense of Humor

Being able to laugh at oneself or having a sense of humor is one of the most important qualities in a person. It allows us to not take life too seriously and can lighten the everyday routine to life.

*Treat Yourself With Kindness and Gently

This is as simple as it sounds. Instead of being your own worst enemy, be your own best friend. Speak kindly to yourself, build up your self-esteem and sing your praises and accomplishments and strengths. Just like a best friend does.

*Show Yourself Self-Love and Self-Care

Taking time for yourself in whatever form that may be. Whether it is through exercise, study, meditation, journaling, hobbies or quiet time. It is your time to recharge yourself.

*Be on Good Terms with People

Communicate and share regularly with the people who are in your day to day life (spouses, significant others, co-workers, family, friends). Spend time with these people and celebrate your connection.

*Foster a Creative Attitude and Environment
Make your home your sanctuary and refuge from the outside the world. Fill your area with items you love, fragrant, colorful flowers, pictures and quotes that speak to you, music you can dance to, books you loved to read, and other things that give inspiration and build up your spirit.

These are some of the practices that I have tried in my life to create a healthy lifestyle. But I would love to hear from you as well. Please share your tips and techniques.

In the meantime, be fit!

A healthy lifestyle has much more than being physically fit, it means to have mental and emotional wellness too.
