These techniques have been used to reduce pain in labor for a century and now a days are more widely applied than ever. This is a consequence of the growing body of scientific research demonstrating the benefits of using hypnotherapy in the clinical setting.

Hypnosis has been used in obstetrics for many years. In 1922 Schultze-Rhonhof reported an 89.5% success rate in a series of 79 cases. He came to the conclusion that hypnosis was a useful anesthetic and safe.

But not everyone thought that hypnosis was a technique completely safe for mother and child. Today, more than 50 years after these studies were conducted at the time of the powerful study designs like the randomized clinical trial, hypnosis has been recognized as a proven method to avoid pharmacological or invasive interventions for the management of pain.

In a systematic review conducted by the Cochrane Collaboration, joint results of five clinical trials comparing self-hypnosis with the standard treatment have shown that women have learned self-hypnosis decreased requirements for pharmacological analgesia 47%, including epidural analgesia by 70%. These women were much more satisfied with their pain management during labor compared with controls.
